Born in East Chicago, Derek Bailey is the son of divorced parents and has one sister named Kathy. He began singing at the age of five taking part in his Uncle's Band rehearsals. Derek later distinguished himself in the R&B scene by penning many politically charged songs, which struck a chord in the hearts of inner city youth. Almost immediately, the media drew comparisons between Derek Bailey and Marvin Gaye who had also written a number of political songs in the 1960's. But also due to his ability to sing sultry love songs like, So Long, which became a radio and internet favorite.

Derek Bailey's success was boosted in late 2006, when "So Long," from his mixtape the Escape hit the internet. The following year, "the Escape," Derek's power house track produced by Rocwilder became an underground favorite.

Derek Bailey's fans are patiently waiting for his debut album, D.C. Burning, which is set to drop in 2007. The record is said to feature production by Derek Bailey, Timbaland, Rocwilder, Dr. Dre, Mike II, Kanye West, Lil Jon, D.Playa, and Avirexx, with guest vocals by Flybaby, Nas, Kanye West, Jackie Rae and Canibus.
