Der Yid

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Der Yid (Yiddish: דער איד) is a Yiddish language weekly newspaper. Although the newspaper is published by Satmar Hasidim, it is widely read within the "black hat" community.

Der Yid does not use standard YIVO Yiddish. Instead, it uses a Yiddish dialect more common to Satmar Chasidim.

[edit] History

Der Yid was founded by Aharon Rosmarin as a fortnightly paper. In 1955 it was bought out by the Satmar community in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The paper was revamped by Alexander Deutch [Sender Dietch] into a weekly newspaper carrying world news.

The first editor of Der Yid was the writer Uriel Zimmer, publisher of an anti-Zionist tract.

At a later date the Satmarer Rebbe appointed Berl Friedman as editor.
