Der Blat

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Der Blat (Yiddish: דער בלאט) is a weekly newspaper in Yiddish. It is published in New York by Satmar Hasidim.

[edit] History

Der Blat was established in 2000, as a direct result of the Satmar succession feud. Until then there was one Satmar newspaper, Der Yid. In the dispute over the Satmar succession, Der Yid fell under the control of one side of the feud, namely, that of Rabbi Zalman Teitelbaum. This left the supporters of his rival, Rabbi Aharon Teitelbaum, with no platform of propaganda and public relations, prompting them to establish their own splinter newspaper, with literally the same style as Der Yid. The only noticeable difference being that it promotes Rabbi Aharon as the legitimate successor of the previous rebbe instead of Rabbi Zalman.

Der Blat is considered today as a well established and successful newspaper, and there are some who believe that it has even outgrown its competitor Der Yid, and is the biggest Yiddish newspaper.
