From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Deppeler is a family surname (like Smith (surname)) with its origins in de:Tegerfelden, in the Zurzach (district), canton Aargau, Switzerland. Other versions of the name may be Däppeler, Däbler, Däbbeler, and Deppler.

The name is unique in the way that Deppelers around the world can be traced to de:Tegerfelden, Switzerland. To this day, a unusual large number of village inhabitants carry the surname (about 4 percent).

[edit] History

The name is mentioned as early as the late Middle Ages. The Deppelers probably arrived in Tegerfelden from Southern France. The name possibly has its origins in the French term dépailler (to thresh straw).

Mostly around the second half of the 19th century, several Deppelers emigrated to foreign countries. Links have been established with Deppelers between Tegerfelden, Switzerland, and Argentina, Australia, and the United States. Most emigrants are part of the 18th century famine in Switzerland. Emigrants were given a pair of shoes and a one-way ticket to some foreign destination.

The Deppeler family crest is derived from a stained glass window of the (reformed) church of Tegerfelden, Switzerland. It depicts a castle, a fleur-de-lis, and a white dove.
