Deposit feeders are organisms that feed on the particles of matter in the soil, usually the top sediment where it is filled with organic matter. This can happen by either ingesting the soil or by trapping the falling particles. Deposit feeders can feed on mud or sand without sorting. Because they ingest sediments directly to extract the organic component, these organisms may concentrate toxic contaminants.
