Department of Library and Information Science (DLIS), of University of Kerala, is the first academic institution which started library science education in Kerala. The Department is situated within the Library Building of University of Kerala at Thiruvananthapuram.

The Department was founded in 1961 on the initiative of the then University Librarian Prof. K. A. Isaac. It is one of the early teaching and research departments in the University of Kerala. The Master of Library and Information Science (MLISc.) course was introduced in the department in 1979. Since 1982-83 the Department has been enrolling Scholars for Ph.D. The Department started the Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) course in Library and Information Science in 1998. A Part-time MLISc. course was also introduced in the same year. Merging the MLISc. and BLISc. courses of one year duration each, the Department started two year Integrated MLISc. course in 2003.

The faculty members of the Department are Sri, M. Varghese, Sri. K. P. Vijayakumar and Dr. A. Gopikkuttan. The former faculty members of the Department include Sri. C. A. Augustine, Sri. M. M. Job, Dr. M. Bavakutty and Dr. C. V. Rajan Pillai.
