As of 2001 India censusGRIndia, Deoria had a population of 104,222. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Deoria has an average literacy rate of 73%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 79% and, female literacy is 67%. In Deoria, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Deoria is considered to be a pious place for Budhists, because in a near by town Kushinagar Mahatama Budh took Samadhi. Kushinagar, now is in newly found distt of Padrauna. Deoria is also famous for its sugar mills.
देवरिया बौध्द धर्म के अनुयायियों दवारा बहुत पवित्र रूथल माना जाता है क्योंकि यहां से मात्र 28 किमी दूर स्थित नगर कुशीनगर में महात्मा बुध्द ने समाधि ग्रहण की थी। कुशी नगर अब देवरिया से काट कर बनाऐ गये नये जिला पडरौना में स्थित है। देवरिया यहां स्थित चीनी मिलों के लिए भी प्रसिध्द है।
