Dennis Orcollo
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dennis Orcollo (b. January 28, 1979), sometimes called Dennis Orcullo, is a Filipino professional pool player, nicknamed "Surigao". He has been called "the Philippines' Money-Game King." [1]
Like a number of upcoming players from the Philippines, Orcollo was first seen on television in his contention at the Rising Stars Tournament in 2000. Back then, his skill was rather mediocre. He also made a few appearances in events in the country.
At the 2002 World 9-ball Championship, this was where Orcollo appeared to be a much better player and threat to adversaries. In the last 64, he bested Ralf Souquet 9-8, an outcome that not many expected. Though he lost 9-6 to Efren Reyes in the last 32, he gave quite a challenge and shown improvement in his game.
In 2006, Orcollo began his campaign in the US. There, he won a number of tournaments which include the Reno Open, the Hard Times 9-ball event and a couple of bar table events.
Because his compatriots had entered a less prestigious event in Asia, Orcollo was the only player from the Philippines to compete in the World Straight Pool Championship, the one dominated by Thorsten Hohmann in 2006. Although he didn't win nor receive any prize money, how he played was very promising. He even made a high run of 91 which is quite impressive for someone who comes from a country that's mainly ignorant in straight pool.
In 2007, Orcollo made a better straight pool run of 93 at an exhibition in the US.[1] Also, he almost won his first world title at the WPA World Eight-Ball Championship. However, he was bested by his compatriot Ronato Alcano.
