Denis Salnikov

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Denis Salnikov is a former byline appearing on the byline of Club Review, a column in the English-language Moscow newspaper the eXile. According to a LiveJournal post by eXile author Kirill Pankratov, Salnikov is a "fictional personage invented by Mark Ames to skewer various idiots" (придуманный Марком Эймсом персонаж, чтобы подкалывать всяких идиотов).[1]

The column, in addition to critically evaluating nightlife venues, describes the hedonistic nocturnal adventures of its fictional author, a member of Russia's new young cultural elite called the golden youth (золотая молодёжь). Salnikov's writing reflects an outlook typical to the New Russian (Новый руский) cultural phenomenon, and emphasizes status, wealth, and conspicuous consumption. According to his eXile columns, Salnikov is the son of a wealthy Moscow businessman.

Recently Salnikov's father has fallen out of favour in Moscow; having been obliged to leave the city while his father recovers from a heart attack, Salnikov has been forced to discontinue writing the Club Review column (that rôle having been assumed by Hannah Katz). Salnikov's considerable creative talents are not being wasted, however; the eXile has revealed that he is soon to start production on a film about "the tragic rise and fall of a privileged, cultured Russian family which is forced into exile in France."

Salnikov is not the first fictional eXile byline.[2] He is, however, the first such fictional personage to be taken in earnest by a feature in the British newspaper, in particular The Sunday Times.
