Denanke
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Kingdom of Denanke also called Denianke or Denyanke was a pre-Islamic Fula kingdom of Senegal from 1495 to 1776. Denanke dominated the Futa Tooro region before the Fula converted to Islam and dominated its neighbors through use of cavalry.
The first ruler (Manga) or Denanke made his capital at the ancient city of Tekrur. The kingdom fought several battles against the Mali Empire (1481-1514) to its east and the Wolof peoples to its south.
Denanke was overthrown by the kingdom of Futa Tooro under leader Abd-el-Kadr Toorodi in 1776 ushering in a near continuous era of Muslim Fula rule over the region.
