According to the 2001 Census taken by the Tamil Nadu Government, the total population stood at 62,405,679, with 31,400,909 males, 31,004,770 females, a sex ratio of 987 females per 1000 males, literacy rate of 73.45%, 13.11% of the population below seven years and a population density of 479.83. The officially recorded growth rate of Tamil Nadu at 2001 was 11.72%. The growth rate among females was 12.50% and the growth rate among males was 10.96%. [3]

The officially recorded literacy rate for Tamil Nadu is 73.45%, which is well above the national average.[4] The total number of literates amounts to 40,524,545 people, of which 22,809,662 people are males and 17,714,883 people are females.[5]

The officially recorded sex ratio is 987 females per 1000 males, which is well above the national average.[6]
