Since consensus seems to be achieved, I've closed the discussion. I've contacted several contributers asking them to verify the conclusions. Radiant! 10:26, Mar 8, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] One new list

All we need is one new article: List of post towns in the United Kingdom. According to the ONS [1] there are 2934 postal districts (eg. BR1) but by organising it as post towns (but in postcode sequence) the table will need less than 1500 rows because:

  • Bridlington, for example, uses YO15 & YO16. And there are 48 postal districts in Birmingham.
  • There will be one row for each London postal area (eg. NW) linking to London postal district.

I have so far created a dozen rows of the list at User:RHaworth/Postal Districts to see what it will look like. And straightaway I ran into one opportunity (we don't have problems) of the design - AB3 covers 12 post towns! My source is http://3lib.ukonline.co.uk/pocketinfo/data/postuk.csv (only 75k). By the time it has been wikified, it will scarcely be a copyvio. But I have an email for the guy what done it and will ask permission. -- RHaworth 14:09, 2005 Mar 8 (UTC)

  • Well done! Btw it might be useful to do this in the 'main' namespace rather than your talk page, because then other people would be able to help. Just a thought. Radiant! 08:38, Mar 9, 2005 (UTC)
    • I now have permission to use the CSV file. I have some useful, 20 year old software tools which I think will speed the mechanical task of converting "," into ]||[ . But I take your point and will try and make it collaborative as soon as possible - I am very happy to let a Scotsperson sort out which post town in AB3 is in which county! -- RHaworth 16:43, 2005 Mar 9 (UTC)

[edit] Now live

List of postal districts in the United Kingdom now exists. It is pretty raw. Edit. Enjoy! -- RHaworth 19:41, 2005 Mar 10 (UTC)

[edit] Here or Wikisource?

  • I note a debate Wikipedia talk:Do lists of postal codes belong on Wikipedia? in 2004 April, the conclusion of which seems to have been that Wikisource appears not to want them. A good argument for having them here is that they can have easier-to-create Wikilinks. -- RHaworth 10:50, 2005 Mar 8 (UTC)
    • Good point. Okay, they should stay here then. Radiant! 13:33, Mar 8, 2005 (UTC)
  • Does this mean that we should keep the List of zip codes in the United States? I'd personally not want that in wikipedia, as it would be extremely long, hard to maintain, and not overly usefull. DaveTheRed 18:13, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)
    • It's currently up for VfD. We'll let the consensus decide. I've heard that Wikisource is less, well, democratic than we are, and that the submission of such material was vetoed by one important person on Wikisource. Radiant! 08:22, Mar 9, 2005 (UTC)
