[edit] Definitions

This section contains a couple of definitions that will be useful later in this article.

Alphabet
The alphabet A is a finite set of symbols A = \left( a_0, a_1, \dots, a_{N_a-1} \right). The number of symbols is Na.
Sequence
A sequence is a finite or infinite list of symbols S = \left( s_0, s_1, \dots \right). Each symbol sj is chosen from the alphabet A. The lenght of a finite sequence is denoted with Ns. For infinite sequences we define N_s = \infty.
