[edit] What is the reason for this template?

This seems to be non-standard, and not especially useful. If someone wants to find out why a page was deleted, they can look in the deletion log; no reason an admin should have to type out another deletion reason when they already typed one in the deletion log. Most deleted pages are just junk anyway, no one except their original creator wants to re-create them, and he already knows why it was deleted. —Centrxtalk • 00:56, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

The {{deletedpage}} template (which you're referring to) is extremely unhelpful for most users:
  • It provides several links to check, most of which don't provide the information the user is looking for.
  • In many cases, the deletion log is highly unreadable for someone not inured to its messiness (for example, see Special:Undelete/Abusive Aussie Husband/Battered Southern Wife stereotype). The deletion log ranks just behind the block log in terms of obtuse Wikipedia slang: "A7", "nn", "CSD G3", and "db-attack" are common deletion reasons.
  • Administrators very often neglect to provide any reason at all when protecting.
  • It suggests the user contact the administrator who protected the page, and links to the page about administrators; what about those who don't know how to find out who protected the page?
  • It is difficult for maintaining users to know when it was protected (checking the edit log can be annoying when you're going through the entire category).
Users (other than the creator) may often stumble across a {{deletedpage}}; through a Google result, by typing in a subject they think should be included, et cetera. Perhaps someday someone will want to write about a music album called "[[Insert text]]". Nobody should be forced to dig through logs and check through archives of deletion discussions to find a simple reason.
This template resolves all of these problems, and only takes a few seconds to place. It links directly to the administrator's talk page for users who are confused or want more information, and provides the reason in plain English. Additionally, the administrator can add any other relevant notes (such as the date of protection, so that it can be deleted later when the recreator forgets about it). I fail to see how this template is "not especially helpful". // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 04:04, 26 August 2006 (UTC)
