Dell Dimension

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Dell Dimension" is the name of a home desktop computer line manufactured by Dell, Inc. As of late 2005 Dell has split its consumer desktop models into two lines, Dimension and XPS. Dell has also renamed many of their models, i.e. the successor to the Dimension 5100 became the E510, the successor to the Dimension 3000 became the E310.

The Dimension series is regarded as a budget-conscious line in keeping with Dell's original corporate philosophy of cultivating market share through affordable PC technology. Dimension computers rarely cost more than US$1,000. However, their motherboards are noticeably less powerful than their XPS brethren, which makes them less able to be upgraded and necessitates their replacement earlier than would otherwise be the case (thus generating more revenue for Dell).

To add to the confusion, Dell continues to sell many of these models under the old naming convention in their business store and in international markets.

[edit] Introduction of AMD CPUs in Dells

  • Starting in September 2006, Dell released Dimension computers with AMD processors. [1]

[edit] Current Dimension Series Information

  • Dimension E521- This is the midrange PC and one of the first AMD Dell Computer in Dell Dimension line, with a AMD Athlon 64 or Sempron processor and uses a nVidia GeForce 6150 LE opposed to Intel GMA and can be upgraded by using PCI-E x16 slot. It can be ordered with any 32-bit Edition of Windows Vista, and offers TV tuners. If you upgrade the video, regardless of whether you use the PCI-E x16 slot or one of the PCI slots, you can't continue using the integrated nVidia GeForce 6150 LE. Even though the CPU is 64-bit, Dell will not install 64-bit Windows Vista on this machine.
  • Dimension E520- Same as the E521 but uses an Intel motherboard and uses Intel Core 2 Duo processors, and starts with an Intel X3000 integrated video card.
  • Dimension C521- Very similar to the E520 but uses a smaller form factor.
  • Dimension 5150- Only in the Dell small business section and uses the same parts as the legacy E510 using a G945 chipset.
