Del Playa Drive
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Del Playa Drive (also known as D.P.) is a street in Isla Vista, California that overlooks the ocean. The street stretches over the full length of the unincorporated city (about one mile). It is the heart of the Isla Vista "party scene". Specifically, the first two thirds of the street from the University of California, Santa Barbara campus border to Camino Corto.
Parties ranging in size from a few people to several hundred are plagued by typical college problems of excessive drinking, underage drinking, and drug use. The Isla Vista Foot Patrol regularly patrol the street to keep the peace and enforce the rule of law.
[edit] Erosion
Del Playa Drive has also been the source of some controversy over housing, as some of the apartment buildings are falling off of the rapidly eroding cliffs. Recently, however, steps have been taken to slow the erosion by reinforcing the cliffs with imported rock, concrete and other artificial support structures, and by redirecting water runoff through the cliffs, rather than over them as it would flow naturally.
[edit] Halloween
Every year thousands of "out-of-towners" flock to the community of Isla Vista to celebrate the holiday of Halloween at it's best. Nearly 30,000 people take over IV, and it's main party scene Del Playa Drive. DP on Halloween is overrun with guys in goofy costumes and girls in scandalous ones. Those who are fortune enough to live on DP often to choose to watch the festivities from their own balconies that overlook the street, packed from side to side with everything from an eleven person group dressed as a game of beer pong to police on horseback.
