DeKalb High School dates its founding to the early 1900s.

In 2005, DeKalb had an average composite ACT score of 20.9 and graduated 83.2% of its senior class. The average class size is 19.0. DeKalb has not made Adequate Yearly Progress on the Prairie State Achievements Examination, a state test part of the No Child Left Behind Act.

DeKalb's 22 athletic teams are known as the Barbs. This name comes from the fact that barbed wire was invented in DeKalb County. Its nine boys teams and thirteen girls teams now compete in the Western Sun Conference—which was just formed in 2006—as well as in the Illinois High School Association.
