[edit] Christianity
Primarily through the teachings of Paul, most Christian theologies deify Jesus in some sense, rather than considering him simply a Prophet, as some scholars might. Muslim thought often proscribes the Christian deifying of Jesus as sinful.
[edit] Islam
Alawis deify Ali, and sometimes all Shi'a have been erroneously accused of the same.
According to both Shi'a and Sunnis, deifying someone or something is shirk and nullifies Islam
[edit] Paganism
In antiquity, emperor Hadrian deified his lover Antinous, who drowned in the Nile and whose death was deemed sacrificial. His cult survives today in the modern Ecclesia Antinoi. Pharaohs, Sumerian kings, and emperors were frequently worshipped in life as deities. After his death, Julius Caesar was deified.
