Character pages?

The characters page has been cleaned. Can someone put a spoiler warning to appease those who don't want to be spoiled?

Hey, I think it would be a cool idea to give each character their own pages, and then let users edit them. There is a lot of info on the characters. As for spoilers, there would just need to be a spoiler warning.-user

What season of DTNG is Australia at now? As far as where an editor can go in spoliers, that would eb nice to know. Ithink the character descriptiosn could be tweeked abit, becuase some of them just read awkward. --Boycottthecaf 04:13, 26 August 2005 (UTC)

This page has been through quite a few major edits in the past 2 months, one of which was at my hands. Basically, there was a good, simple page here which was skewed by a fan of one of the characaters. I've attempted to return the page to a neutral point of view (NPOV) and fill in much missing info but it still suffers from the disorganization of the "Spinner edit."

My instinct right now is to scrap the character descriptions, moving them instead to their own pages.

If I were to split these pages out, would other people be willing to fill in more info about their favorite characters? This would give us more room to go into depth about the actors who play them, their individual histories, etc, but would be quite a bit of work.

I can't see that as being useful. The page isn't large enough that it needs to be split, and I don't know if it's really necessary to have a separate page for each character. The character descriptions could be a bit better and slightly longer, but we don't need to have more than three or four sentences for each.Kevin M Marshall 21:06, 12 Jan 2005 (UTC)
I wouldn't object if they were split out, but I'm not all that bothered either way. Ambi 23:22, 12 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Spinner is fucking awesome, you need to learn that, and shut your bitch mouth. Don't make me come over there. Boycottthecaf 12:28 AM 4 Feb 2005 (Toronto Time)
The page is really effective and interesting as it is, with the character descriptions involing recent plot lines. I think creating indivdiual character pages would be a mistake. However, the page reveals all the major plots from the third series which have yet to be seen in Australia. Perhaps a spoiler warning would be appropriate. If you agree, say something here, or just put one up. Spinner is awesome, but there is no need to bully people in these wiki forums Boycottthecaf. --Commander Keane 12:15, 4 Feb 2005 (UTC)
All I'm saying is that, if anything, more of Wikipedia needs to be devoted to Spinner. Who the hell cares about the history of Poland or say, women's sufferage, when we can delete that crap and make room for articles on Spinner getting a boner or finding earwigs in the caf or telling Rick to shoot Jimmy? Boycottthecaf 11:15 PM 5 Feb 2005 (Toronto Time)
Looking at the page again, I completely agree with Ambi and Commander Keane - I think the page works fairly well as it is. If I were to have request list for this page it would be:
  • Remove any unnecessary plot spoilers / add a spoiler disclaimer at the top.
  • Ensure Neutral point of view
  • Include missing characters

Character pages Part II: The Reckoning

Infinare once said to me: "Is Chante's surname really Black? and I think Rick deserves main character because he had a major impact on the show for a 'minor character'. And he's had more episodes about him than Hazel. He should be an exception to the Credits rule."

I'm pretty sure it is Black. I guess I would have to dig up whatever the episode was where it was mentioned.

As for Rick, while he has centered around more episodes than Hazel, I thinkt that dividing the chacacters based on whether their actor was billed in the opening credits, or just mentioned as a guest at the closing credits is a good way to sort them out. It sticks to a NPOV by going how the show itself feels they were prominent instead of how indivual fans feel. This way, we can avoid too much bickering and edit wars over people who inject their own opinions over how important each character is.

I think it stands up pretty well. --Boycottthecaf 01:44, 6 October 2005 (UTC)

The character bios are getting really long and taking their toll on the page's size and load time. I suggest creating a new spinoff page for the character desciptions, so people can go hog wild with details and spoilers there, and shorten the descriptions on the main Degrassi TNG page to a sentence or two that don't reveal anything spoilerish, and just include the main characters. This would clean up the page. --Boycottthecaf 00:25, 9 October 2005 (UTC)

I created Degrassi:_The_Next_Generation_characters and moved the bios there becuase the size of the page was getting longer than the recomended size. Now the page should load faster. --Boycottthecaf 00:29, 11 October 2005 (UTC)
I just reorganized this page extensively by grade level. Please tell me what you think.--Max 22:07, 30 December 2005 (UTC)

I think Darcy should be a regular charater now. Le Raine

Community College

Being from Australia I am curious about the definition of a Comunity College, which is featured in The Next Generation.

In Australia we have Primary School (ages 6-12/Grades 1-7) and Secondary School[High School] (ages 13-17/Grades 8-12).

What is the situation in Canada? --Commander Keane 10:21, 19 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Degrassi is a community school, not a community college. I have no idea if there is a difference between community schools and a regular secondary school, other than Degrassi is a hell of alot better funded than any school I've ever been too. I think "community school" is just a phrase the show uses. The US and Canada both have the Australian set up, so I assume it's similar among English speaking countries, at least. (I'm a American, but near the Canadian border, for what it's worth.)

Community college, on the other hand, is usually a two year college that costs way less a four year college or university. There are also open to pretty much anyone, and are usually the way high school drop outs can go to college. Most people in a community college wanting a four year degree transfer to a four year college or universiy after two years at the community college, though the community college near my town offers four year degrees in nursing. Also, a person (usually older) could just sign up for only one class for the hell of it in order to learn about something or a new talent, with no intension of completeing a degree. --Boycottthecaf 19:40, 19 Feb 2005 (UTC)

My guess would be that "community school" is the same as "public school". It seems that the Irish usage of "community school" is synonomous. --Tydaj 04:31, 26 Apr 2005 (UTC)
A community school typically offers public education for youth, as well as programs for the general community. There may be before and afterschool care for children, continuing education programs, night school, etc. The idea is that the school is a centre for the community, rather than a facility that sits empty from 3 pm until 9 am every day. --Westendgirl 07:00, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

Domestic violence?

First of all, I love the series, thats why I never miss an episode. Which leads me to a question: today I saw a boy hit his girlfriend and basically be real abusive towards her in an episode. She seems to be the type of person who accepts this violence as an act of love.

Since they are not living together, only school mates, how can we describe this show of "romantic' (cant find another word) violence in the article? Im not sure that the term domestic violence would count in this case.

"Antonio Degrassi Freshman Martin"

Well, judging by the article at domestic violence, I think it could be considered domestic violence, although literally speaking I can see where some might have a problem. Nevertheless I don't think there's any other applicable term, at least not one with a Wikipedia entry. I wouldn't see a problem with including domestic violenc on the list of controversial topics which Degrassi deals with. Kevin M Marshall 21:28, 4 Mar 2005 (UTC)

You can say she was in "an abusive relationship," or use the term "abusive relationships." I think "domestic violence" would be fine, and most people use the term to describe violence between couples in a general, not literal, sense - but I'd say something like "abusive relationship" or "abusive partner" or "violent relationship." Let's please stop the edit war before it really gets going

It looks like we've had a bit of an edit war going with some information about the character JT. While the information which has been posted about the size of the character's penis is factually correct (according to an episode in Season 4), it isn't exactly worthy of being the second sentence in a description of JT. If the description of each character were a decent-sized paragraph, I think it could be reasonable to include this information. In any case, I'd rather not see an edit war erupt over the issue.

To those who have been editing and putting the sentence back in: Please realize that it is not the second-most important thing about JT and that it doesn't really belong in a two sentence description.

To those who have been deleting it: it is NOT vandalism. It is an issue which Degrassi has covered (Season 4, Episode 4 "Mercy Street") [1]. Whether it merits inclusion, I don't know, but please realize that it is not simple vandalism.Kevin M Marshall 21:09, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Is there a good way to deal with the spoilers in the character descriptions?

Thanks to the fact that Degrassi airs first in Canada, then in the US, then in Australia, we've got a bit of a sticky situation with regards to dealing with spoilers in the character descriptions. Where exactly is the Australian series right now--somewhere in season 2 or 3? Ideally we can give a good description of each character while avoiding outright spoilers of anything that hasn't been seen yet in Australia or the US. I noticed a couple descriptions which include things that haven't occurred yet in the US airings. While I realize we have a spoiler warning, we're dealing with a situation in which there are essentially three different levels of spoilers. I'm not really sure what we can do, apart from having separate sections describing where the characters are for Australia, then for the US, then for Canada. But that would probably be a mess. Any better suggestions?

It will be challenging, but I feel that describing the base personality of each character is possible without disclosing events that have happened to them. From there, working on a tvtome style episode guide (with airdates for Canada, US, and Austraila, so you can avoid reading episodes that haven't aired yet in your region) would be a more appropriate place to list everything that has happened to a character than in their description. I will probably take a crack at this sometime in the near future and put it up for perusal. This was the way the page used to be structured before the initial "spinner-centric edit" by boycotthecaf Glitch010101 03:39, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)
I've made this edit, and while I know it needs to be proofed at least twice more, I don't have the energy tonight. Please edit this section to fix spelling and grammer and to create great descriptions of each character WITHOUT revealing major plot points. Glitch010101 05:29, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the Terri info

Thanks to whoever was at 216.179.96.86 for the excellent writeup of Terri. It works well without revealing any big plot points and really captures her character and the issues she is dealing with. Very well done.Glitch010101 21:07, 6 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Episodes

I think we need a sub-page for the episodes. If every episode is added that would be completely unwieldly.Kevin M Marshall 12:51, 21 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I totally agree. I think the page is already getting a bit long and we've only begun with the episode guide. I'm don't think I've got quite enough dedication to do those summaries myself, but I'll be happy to provide editing/cleanup as we go if other people want to continue to fill them in. Glitch010101 02:40, 22 Apr 2005 (UTC)
  • Is there a template that can be used for creating an episode guide? Alot of other TV show episode guide pages are pretty nice on the eyes, and we should strive for that in remaking the guide. See some examples at [2] --Boycottthecaf 02:13, 23 August 2005 (UTC)

Removed more spoilers

Sorry to those who contributed new information about the characters that has been deleted. We've been trying to keep the character descriptions spoiler free, which means not diviulging any information that might give a big plot secret away.

I'm flexibile here - should we slap a spoiler warning on it and agree to keep info up until a certain season, or do folks like it like it is?

We also attempted a episode guild, but someone "helpfully" pasted the TV tome episode guide there, violating tvtome's copyright. If you want to help fill in events that have happened to the characters since first meeting them, we really need some people to watch the back-episodes and write up a new guide.

Glitch010101 12:55, 13 July 2005 (UTC)

I think we should put maybe make one page that simply has the "premise" of the episode, (e.g. "Emma wonders who her birth dad",) and then give each section a link to an episode page that has a summary, full recap, quotes, goofs, notes, etc.--Max E|C 04:22, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

Fans of Dylan (John Bregar)

I love seeing Degrassi. Especially on On Demand. Pride is my favorite episode. Dylan is hot. Not to mention funny, smart, interesting, and just has the best smile ever. Last night I was watching Degrassi and I had a thought, Why not draw Dylan? So I paused Degrassi and went for some paper and a pencil. Came back, started to draw him. He's now hanging in my room on the wall. I know you may say I'm obsessed. But, hey! What can I say. I'm hooked. I mean, look at his gorgeous blue eyes and his sexy body, and his awsome blondish-brown curly hair. That just about completes it. But first, if I had one wish, it'd be that I could meet John Bregar. OH! I have to go. Degrassi is on. See you later. And have fun writing on this page. Thanks. - —The preceding unsigned comment was added by July 14 2005 (UTC) (talk • contribs).

Emma Nelson history

"Daughter of Christine "Spike" Nelson (who gave birth to Emma in the first season of the original series)" - what it says on the Wiki page

Spike goes into labour in the last episode ("Pass Tense") of the second season of Degrassi Junior High. In the first episode of the third season ("Can't Live With 'Em 1"), it is revealed that she had a baby girl over the summer.

If I knew how to edit these pages, I'd fix the information in Emma's section to read that she was born between teh second and third seasons of DJH, but I'll just hope that someone sees this and fixes it. :)

No worries! I've made the correction for you! ;) (Amchow78)

so about Chante Black and Rick as a major character...he deserves main character because he had a major impact on the show for a 'minor character'. And he's had more episodes about him than Hazel. I don't kno if i like the idea of Kevin Smith directing the movie. Who said he was such a good director? he's just weird. Clerks was incredibly boring, almost as bad as Jet Li's Hero. Smith is just a fanboy with a slightly recognizable name, so that means he gets to alter the Degrassi universe, guest star in eps, and fulfill his dream of kissing Caitlyn? and now he gets to direct the movie?????? no, nuh-uh. leave it to Phil and the normal crew for writing and directing. He's gonna make it different, not Degrassi-like.Infinare 23:47, 9 October 2005 (UTC)
This really isn't the place to talk about how good of a director Smith is. This is th talk page for the Degrassi entry, no a fan forum. As for why Rick should not be int he main charactr catergory, I've adrressed this a couple of times. See up here --Boycottthecaf 20:13, 10 October 2005 (UTC)

Ratings for the show

"In Canada, it is only the second television show to reach over a million viewers (1.1m) on CTV."

Could someone provide a source for that. I remember reading a press release earlier this year where it said that the episode where Jimmy is shot was the highest rated ever and that only had 930,000 viewers. They might have had more viewers after that, but I still think there should be some proof

Actually the highest episode of the series was "Venus" Pt.2 the season 5 opener with Manny. It posted a 1.05 and was the first (maybe only) episode to breach the one million mark.

This episode got 1.05 million viewers for CTV, the highest ratings for the series and the first time it reach the million mark.

http://www.tv.com/degrassi-the-next-generation/venus-2/episode/422587/trivia.html#notes

Lexicon Of Love was also a big ratings grabber.

This episode was watched by 920,000 Canadian viewers on CTV, which grew 16% beyond the seasonal average.

Masturbation?????

What episode dealt with masturbation? I don't remember every hearing about that so if nobody responds here, I am just going to delete it from the list of topics covered.

Masturbation is frequently covered in Degrassi. Take the time when JT and Toby both looked up pornography on Toby’s computer, then got caught by Toby’s parents. And then the time when Ashley wouldn’t sleep with Craig because Spinner made riotous masturbation references with party food. Degrassi without masturbation references would be like a Degrassi without pregnant teens. Stop trying to edit everything.
I asked a simple question, and all I wanted was a civil answer. I have not watched every single episode, and so I have not seen every reference. However, I had heard about all of the others.
"Stop trying to edit everything?" I believe this is the point of Wikipedia.
Please sign your name on the talk pages, like this.--Max ( | ) 04:31, 8 January 2006 (UTC)

Speaking of which episode a topic was covered in, what episode was group sex performed in? It was somewhere in the 4th season, wasn't it? Just curious... 139.168.135.47 04:25, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

It am pretty sure it was in "Secret", where Emma gives Jay a blow job. I don't know where they talk about group sex; I'll have to watch that episode again.
I watched the episode where Toby and JT look at internet porn, and they don't once mention masturbation. Spinner was making sex references, not masturbation references. I may delete this after all.--Max ( | ) 05:30, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

Candy Bandits

Who the hell petitioned to delete the Candy Bandit’s article? That was a key link to the Degrassi: Next Generation storyline. Degrassi deals with teen issues, theft of candy and gangs may make you feel uncomfortable but it's damn important.

Bastards.

I'm not so sure that the Candy Bandits are of importance to the whole encyclopedia. On the other hand, there are pages about all sorts of obscure crud from shows, so I guess if they can be included, the Candy Bandit's can be too. --Max ( | )

Craig Manning

I have created the Craig Manning page. The idea is to create a page in the style of Emma Nelson.

Topics to cover:

  • Intro
  • Season 2
    • Abusive Childhood (I started this but someone needs to clean it up.)
    • Father's death
  • Season 3
    • Relationship with Ashley
    • Cheating on Ashley with Manny
    • Manny's pregnancy
    • Apologizing to Ashley.
  • Season 4
    • Finding Jimmy after he was shot.
    • Hooking up with Ashley again.
    • Being diagnosed with Bipolar disorder
    • Ashley leaving for England/Craig running away.
  • Season 5
    • Breaking up with Ashley
    • Promoting his band
    • Hooking up with Manny again.
    • Leaving for Vancouver

{{Degrassi}}

I have created a Degrassi navigational template for the Degrassi universe, the idea being to model it after the templates like {{B5}}, {{MontyPython}}, {{Friends}}, etc. If you know more about dealing with formatting than I do, (I just copied the B5 one,) please help make it nice.--Max ( | )

Emma Nelson/Nelson-Simpson?

I could be mistaken, but I can't recall any references to "Emma Nelson-Simpson" in the series. I know that Emma adamantly refuses to be called "Emma Simpson" right after Spike & Snake's marriage (I forgot what episode it occurs in), and I can't remember any point where she relents on that. If anyone could provide an episode where she is called "Emma Nelson-Simpson," I'd appreciate it, or else we should change the title of her character page as well as the other places where she is referred to as Nelson-Simpson. Kevin M Marshall 14:30, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

I think you're right. I don't know who decided to put her down as Emma Nelson-Simpson. I think I might move her to Emma Nelson. --Max ( | )

I have moved Emma to Emma-Nelson, which I think is a more accurate spot. Emma Nelson-Simpson now redirects to new page.--

Userbox for fans

I have created a new userbox for fans of this show. You add it by adding {{User DTNG}}.

It looks like this:

This is a bit ugly in my opinion, so if you can help spruce it up, that would be nice.--Max ( | )

What grade is Spinner?

Spinner started out being in the Class of 2006. After he was expelled, he came back in the Class of 2007. He was in Junior English, so does that make him a Junior, or did he just fail that class?--Max ( | )

What about the degrassi minis?

Character Bios we really need to write

Here is a list of character pages which need to be written:

Cast dates

The dates for cast members being on the show should be open-ended and not XXXX-2006. Including an end date — even if it's the current year — indicates that the cast member is no longer on the show as of that date. For folks like Stacey Farber and Jake Epstein, that's okay, because they are leaving the show. But for cast like Pat Mastroianni or Jamie Johnston it's not, as they are still with the show, at least as far as has been publicly stated. If their status changes and they do leave, then we can put 2006 as the end date. Make sense? --Patrick T. Wynne 06:40, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

I think we should have the date format be something more like 2001-Presant isntead of 2001- and then have it blank it just seems like something is missing. SirGrant 02:36, 31 March 2006 (UTC)
First off, do not edit other users' comments.
Second, 2001 - Present would be fine if you absolutely must have something there. But 2001 - 2006 would not. I actually prefer listing cast dates by season, but that's just me. I notice other shows handle the same issue in a variety of ways, so it doesn't look like there's a Wikipedia standard.
--Patrick T. Wynne 16:52, 31 March 2006 (UTC)
ok sorry about editing that it was an accident I musta been looking at your previous edit since you had two and overwritten them, sorry my mistake, secondly I do agree with you that we should probably list them by season that makes a lot more sense to me SirGrant 23:24, 31 March 2006 (UTC)

Couple names

This seems unimportant/encyclopedic to me. I don't actually see the importance of including it in the article because I don't believe it really adds anything to the article at all just some fad that some fan sites have. I mean in the future it's not gonna be verifyable or at all notable in my eyes. What do you guys think. SirGrant 23:11, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

  • Agreed 100%. Not only is it extremely unencyclopedic, but the list is getting insanely long. Why? Because any combination can created with any character, it doesn't matter whether there was ever a relationship before or not. I think it should be removed on the basis above and the fact that it's 100% fan-based and 0% show-based; you don't hear characters saying "Semma" on the show. --pIrish 00:18, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

Couple's Names, Status of Virginity, Upcoming Series 6 spoilers

I agree with the poster above. I see that in the past few days, that someone is posting spoilers about the new theme song and season, as well as someone has now included a list of which characters are virgins or not, with graphic details. I think this part is totally not encyclopedic and some of the spoiler stuff is totally personal views. I am suggesting that we delete those sections. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 70.52.15.19 (talk • contribs) .

  • To be blunt, this information deserves a home on a fansite, not wikipedia. I deleted the virgins section, the couple nicknames section, and the relationship section. I would have kept the relationship section up if the page it linked to was a well-built article, but it's still missing several seasons and does not include enough detail and its role in the storyline to keep. --pIrish 19:30, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
