Deftones is the Deftones' self-titled fourth album. It was released on May 20, 2003 through Maverick Records. This was originally to be titled "Lovers" as stated in earlier interviews. The actual song "Lovers" does however exist on the UK single for "Hexagram" as a B-side. This album sold 167,000 in its first week of release in America and went on to sell over 500,000 copies in the U.S.
The album itself is quite eclectic, as it has songs spanning many different genres and ideas. "Hexagram" and "When Girls Telephone Boys" are extremely heavy songs and are two of the most brutal songs in the band's entire catalog. "Lucky You" is a dark trip hop piece featuring DJ Crook from Team Sleep alongside Frank Delgado. "Anniversary of an Uninteresting Event" is a mournful piece featuring grand piano, vocals, guitars, and drums. The song structures, however, are mostly simplistic. While the few parts in the songs themselves were very strong, there were very few parts per song all around. The album had a much different feel from prior efforts. The band was playing at their most aggressive, going to extremes and tangents only previously hinted at, and the synthesizer work of Frank Delgado puts a dark and earthy atmosphere into all of the songs.
