Deflector shield (Stargate)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Deflector shields are seen many times throughout the Stargate universe, most notably the variety used by the Goa'uld.

[edit] Goa'uld/Tok'ra Shielding
The Goa'uld were the first race seen to possess shielding technology, although it is one of the weakest varieties. The Goa'uld use oscillating frequency principles for their shields, meaning that at the right velocity they can be penetrated by something moving sufficiently slowly or quickly.[1][2]
[edit] Personal Defense Shields
These types of shields are generally used by system lords to defend themselves and use the same oscillating frequency principle as their larger shield counterparts.[1] These forms of shields have also been used to perform as an iris stopping matter from reintegrating unless the user is fitted in Kull warrior armor. It has also been used to create a one-way doorway to hold prisoners who are of extreme danger to the SGC.[3]
[edit] Ship Shields
When struck by a weapon the shields glows orange with the weapon either exploding or bouncing off. Ancient Drone weapons can penetrate the most advanced Goa'uld shielding. The most advanced shields ever to be used by a Goa'uld have been the shields used on Anubis's mothership with Ancient technology so it is unknown if these forms of shields are just copies of the ancient shielding or if they have been modified by Anubis enough to be classified as original technology. Shields currently used by the Jaffa and Tok'Ra are incapable of fully stopping the primary energy weapons of Ori warships, either. It is also unknown wether the shields on Anubis's ship could withstand the main weapon of an Ori ship.
[edit] Asgard Shielding
Asgard shielding is of the most sophisticated shielding available possibly capable of rivaling the Ancients, one of the most profound shield makers to ever have existed. Asgard shielding uses a front and aft shielding generator[4] to create a round elliptical barrier when struck. When struck the shield becomes apparent in its shape as stated above but also color. The colors seem to depend on the ship but it is unknown why or if it serves a purpose as to why the colors are different. This form of shield is the primary defense for all Beliskner-class cruisers as well as the BC-303 Prometheus and Daedalus (304). The shield will succumb to continuous fire and eventually allow damage to bleed through to the hull of the ship if it is not removed from fire to allow itself time to recharge. A shield equipped with a ZPM gains a significant boost in power.
While in hyperspace, Asgard shields will not function, and the vessel will succumb to an external explosion if one occurs. Samantha Carter used this vulnerability against a fleet of Replicators invading an Asgard world. The Asgard used the first of the O'Neill class battleships as a decoy, fleeing into hyperspace. The Replicators followed it, and were destroyed when the ship self destructed.[5]
As of Season 10 finale of Stargate SG-1, Unending, the true power of the Asgard shield is witnessed after an upgraded version was implemented on the Earth vessel, the Odyssey. The new weapons of the Asgard also make clear of the high-technology the Asgard created. The Odyssey was not only able to take damage from three Ori motherships but it was also capable of destroying them with the Asgard weapons it now had on-board. Hence, proving the fact that Asgard shielding surpasses that of the Ancients, as most Ori technology is nearly the same as the Ancients or Alterans, as they were known to the Ori, where they both co-existed together.
[edit] Ancient Shielding
The Ancients were arguably the most advanced shield makers in the universe. They were successful in creating almost impenetrable shields used as prison cells, on ships, and on their city Atlantis. The Ancient shields on a damaged (and presumably power-depleted) Ancient ship were capable of surviving in the midst of a huge volcanic eruption for at least 4.1 seconds.[6]
The Ancient shield on Atlantis is the most powerful shield in the Stargate universe (on par or perhaps even more advanced than Ori shields). Unlike most other shields the Atlantis shield does not glow when a portion of it is impacted, instead it stays clear and (when observed closely) ripples gently. Atlantis' shield does not deplete under constant fire, while all other shields eventually deplete if under heavy bombardment — instead, the shield will remain strong as long as it has sufficient power to keep it that way.
A unique feature of Ancient shielding is that it is the same shape as the ship, Almost like a second hull.
[edit] Ori Shielding
The Ori, much like the Ancients, have developed powerful shielding that is, so far, impenetrable by all but one form of weapon. The shields of the Ori are a milky white color and form around the the vessel in a bubble like dome, unlike Ancient shielding which acts like a second hull.
Two different types of Ori shields have been seen, thus far:
- Ship-based shields, as seen on Ori battlecruisers, have only a select number of weaknesses - they do not protect against the "kawoosh" of a Stargate[7], their effectiveness is reduced when the main weapon of an Ori battlecruiser is fired, they do not protect against the Dakara Superweapon, they cannot repel Ancient Drone Weapons[8], and they are unable to withstand several hits from the Odyssey's Asgard Beam Weapons. None the less, they are the second most powerful shields ever seen(after the atlantis shield), surviving multiple hits from a Goa'uld mothership, a Daedalus class battlecruiser and an O'Neill class battleship[9]. They can also stand up to a full speed collision with a Ha'tak.
- Adria's pendant is the most advanced personal shield that has yet been seen in the Stargate universe. In addition to providing protection against projectile-based weapons [10], it is the only known device capable of providing protection against the Dakara Superweapon. Its effectiveness against energy-based weapons has yet to be seen, although it is likely it is just as effective as staff-based shields are. According to Adria, it contains a piece of Celestis - the Ori homeworld. [11] Apparently, the shield could also be extended to protect others if the user desired it. [10] However, the shield cannot withstand a powerful energy blast from a Prior. [12]
