Definitely Not the Opera

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Definitely Not the Opera (DNTO) is a magazine-style radio program focusing on aspects of pop culture. The program is broadcast on CBC Radio One on Saturday afternoons, 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. (Eastern time).

Originally named Brand X, it was first broadcast in 1994 and has remained one of CBC's top-rated radio programs throughout its run. The show contains more or (usually) less serious articles on pop-culture phenomena, movie, video and music reviews. Its name derives from the fact that it plays opposite Saturday Afternoon at the Opera on CBC Radio Two. The program often airs serialized programming in several different genres, such as comedy, musical concerts, biographical series on entertainment and pop culture figures. The final hour of the program often features a live concert of some description.

Originally hosted by Nora Young, current host Sook-Yin Lee, a former MuchMusic VJ, took over in 2002. Under her management the show has adopted a quirkier tone, with new fun features including "Name That Ringtone" and "Celebrities on Helium".
