Defence Nuclear Material Transport Operations are also known as:

  • DNM Transportation
  • Defence Nuclear Material in transit
  • Nuclear movements
  • DNM movements

There are five different types of DNM movements within the UK:

  1. Nuclear Weapons (warheads) convoys by road
  2. Special nuclear material convoys by road
  3. SNM by train
  4. SNM by air
  5. new and used reactor fuel from Royal Navy submarines

The Special Escort Group of the Ministry of Defence Police, SEG (MDP), escort the nuclear materials and remain on standby in case of accident.

Responsibility for road convoy operations rests with the Director Nuclear Movements & Nuclear Accident Response Group (DNM&NARG). They also own the safety cases which contain the nuclear materials.

In the event of an accident control passes to MOD Nuclear Accident Response Organisation (NARO).
