Deer Lake (British Columbia)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Deer Lake is a relatively small, oval-shaped lake in the central part of Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada. It is situated about one kilometre southwest of much larger Burnaby Lake from which it is separated by the Trans-Canada Highway and Canada Way.

Deer Lake is surrounded by Deer Lake Park with several walking trails going around the shore. A number of creeks flow into Deer Lake from all sides as it sits in a natural bowl.

Deer Lake Park (enter off Canada Way at Sperling Avenue) has become the cultural centre of Burnaby, with the Burnaby Art Gallery at the haunted Ceperly House, the recently built Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, Burnaby Village Museum with a vintage carousel and the posh Hart House Restaurant located in a beautiful heritage building. Annual summer concerts are held in the Park.

According to The Greater Vancouver Book, a popular urban encyclopedia by Chuck Davis, adult salmon pass through Deer Lake on their way to tributaries where they spawn.

Local Indian legends tell about a hidden waterway between False Creek and Deer Lake. It was discovered by a young Indian who saw an orca whale swimming in Deer Lake with a spear sticking out of its back. The Indian recognized his spear that he had thrown at the whale a long time before while hunting in False Creek. Coordinates: 49.236655° N 122.977395° W
