The Debrune were a civilisation in the fictional Star Trek universe, that had become extinct long before the events depicted in the various Star Trek series. The Debrune were an ancient offshoot of the Vulcans and, possessed the capability for interstellar travel.
The Debrune also had several factions who it was believed sought to dominate stellar commerce. Several feuding factions would eventually coalesce into the group that would later move on to Romulus and found the Romulan Star Empire. The losing groups of Debrune were thought to have either been exterminated or to have died out in relative isolation.
The events of the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Gambit (Part I)" indicate that the Debrune were unknown to contemporary Romulan historians, who it is stated had purged any reference to their leaving Vulcan from their histories. Their existence is marked solely by their archaeological remains, which by the late 24th century could be found on Barradas III, which was an outpost of the Debrune in the 4th century CE.
It is also considered highly likely by the episode's characters that the planets of Dessica II, Calder II, Yadalla Prime, and Draken IV were also associated with the Debrune or other early Romulan dissidents. [1]
