~It says Belaurs have abolished it in practice. LOL... - 212.247.27.196

Now, it is abolished in the Phillipines.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 212.247.27.196 (talkcontribs).

there is no current death penalty Alaska, Hawaii and some other states in the US, please fix the map. --Haham hanuka 19:25, 8 Apr 2005 (UTC)
But there is the death penalty at US Federal Government level in these places. Evil MonkeyHello 03:34, Apr 9, 2005 (UTC)
Yes, but in The United States, our federal government is an entirely separate body than the States. For example, the death penalty is gone de facto in Oregon and Delaware, abolished in Massachusetts and Minnesota. And as for it being legal on the Federal level, there has been one execution on the Federal level in the past 50 years. This map is a clear example of how most of the world doesn't understand how The United States operate. R'son-W 05:41, 20 December 2005 (UTC)
I don't think that's it. The death penalty is legal at the federal level. There is a separate map covering the specific states. In fact, there was a federal execution in 2000 (the first since 1963), so this map is accurate - but only because it has the states map alongside it. --Southpaw018 11:50, 26 January 2006 (UTC)
Federalism my friend. But the legalization of the death penalty in the US is predominant, so the map is okay as is, just someone make note that it's not legal in all states. Эйрон Кинни (t) 10:39, 13 June 2006 (UTC)
I really feel the need to address my opinion regarding this - I think the states in the U.S. that have no death penalty should be blue - First of all, the federal government conducts very, very few executions in the U.S., and two (more importantly), you CANNOT be executed for a crime that you commit solely in, say, Michigan. In order for you to be convicted of murder in the federal system, you have to have crossed state lines. The result of this is that nobody has ever been executed, as far as I know, in a state that does not have the death penalty (at least not since it was abolished in those states). Because all the states without the death penalty are mostly clumped together for some reason, it shouldn't be too hard to make some sort of adjustment... I agree the map needs to have something making note of this -- perhaps interlaced blue and red lines? --Shadowlink1014 18:23, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

Green means abolished for ordinary crimes? Where is death penalty given for ordinary crimes? --Just my 2 cents -- Hemanshu 19:19, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC)

  • I've added some clarification to this one. Evil MonkeyHello 21:36, Apr 10, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] POV colors

I hesitate to bring this up because I think the debate will rapidly become silly. OK, hesitation is over. I think the choice of colors on this map is POV. The reason for my claim is self-explanatory. Tempshill 23:10, 31 May 2005 (UTC)

Sorry about the late reply. An interesting point. I'm guessing that your issue is that countries that use the death penalty are red, while the ones that have completely abolished are blue. How would you feel if maybe we swapped the colours around? The colours were chosen by user:IceKarma as they mean that a colourblind person can tell the difference between the various countries. So in that respect I am against changing them to say shades of pink (to pick a neutral colour). POVness of colours was also brought up at Image:Gaymap.PNG, where Pro-homosexuality is green and anti-homosexuality is red. One thing to remember is that this map is used on many other language Wikipedias. Changing the colours will mean having to fix all the other Wikipedia's captions. [edit] Map ease of use

The above-mentioned Image:Gaymap.PNG has a table which explains what all the colors stand for. The Death Penalty map, as the image by itself, does not have any such key. I think this is a real weakness that can be easily remedied.

I've avoided adding a key so that the map can be used on other language Wikipedias without the need to have an image for every language Wikipedia. This way we only need one image on Commons. Evil MonkeyHello 22:40, July 17, 2005 (UTC)
