Deathcrush (1987) |
De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas (1994) |
Deathcrush is the first studio release by the seminal Norwegian black metal band Mayhem. It is one of the first records to define what would become the Norwegian black metal scene that finally crystallised a unified vision of what had before been a very disparate and widely distributed genre of music. Unlike any of Mayhem's future releases, this album was very gore-inspired, the guitars were downtuned and some argue that it is in fact a death metal release, although stylistically the album cannot be seen as anything but straight-up simplistic black metal. It was initially released in a limited edition of 1000 mini-LP by Posercorpse, with a version on LP and CD released by Deathlike Silence Productions in 1993 and other limited edition runs of 1000 picture discs released by Posercorpse in 1998 and GMR Music in 2003.
The song "Deathcrush" ranks as possibly the most covered song in any genre of heavy metal, with Encyclopaedia Metallum listing over 140 different versions within the metal genre, and there are other covers, including a dance cover.[1] The song has become slightly stereotyped as being obligatory as the cover on the demo of any start-up black metal band. Its popularity stems both from its notoriety and individual merits, and from the fact that it is extremely easy to play.
