"Death Valley '69" was the first single from Sonic Youth. Recorded by Wharton Tiers in July 1984, it was released later that December on Iridescence Records.

Both songs are demos of songs that would later appear on Bad Moon Rising. Lydia Lunch co-wrote and sang on Death Valley '69.

The video for "Death Valley '69" was filmed in 1985 was the first music video by Sonic Youth and was directed by Richard Kern. The video features the majority of the band in various states of bloody dismemberment interlaced with live footage of the band.

- The video is the only one to feature both the recently departed drummer Bob Bert, and then new member Steve Shelley
