[edit] My amendments 19 September 2006
The page incorrectly stated that Paul Keating was an old boy. He was not - he is an old boy of De La Salle College Bankstown.
Esto Vir means "Be a Man" and implies virtue - at least the current trend to "Be the best man you can be" is better than the "Be the best person you can be" imposed by several cretinous teachers there in my time (1986-1993) - as though manliness was something to be ashamed of, and this a boy's college!

[edit] Edits on this page
This page is presumably captive to the present administration of the school - I protest at their prevention of amendment on the following grounds:
1. They are presenting a version of the school motto that would be foreign to almost all men who have attended the school since 1916 - they are not even willing to concede that it has been put differently at different times historically or that there is an agenda to how it is presently expressed - I would concede that their present preferred version is still better than the vomitous "be the best person you can be" shit that was prevalent during my time at the college - 1986- 1993. The school motto from 1916 to about 1989 was Bold textalwaysBold textBE A MAN. Some morons made it the best person thing - and now it is the best man - the motto is from the Vulgate version of 1 Kings and I think I recall correctly that it was the advice of David to Solomon - Esto Vir implies virtue, true, but does directly mean "Be a man". This is dishonest political correctness.
2. Many of the amendments I have been putting in are factually true and of interest to the site - things like more important old boys than Rugby League players - Justice Woodward of the Supreme Court and Michael Maher the popular state and federal politician among them. Others I wanted to include were the former existence of a primary department, and a primary feeder school at Haberfield, and to note the long service of Mr Dennis Twomey and Mr Joseph Fernandez, both important institutions in the history of the school.
3. The present version includes vague opinion hostile to the schools reputation in noting that it is a bottom tier school academically - that wasn't true when I was there, and even if it is true now, it is not something that I would think they would want brought to the attention of the world at large. My graduating class (2003) includes a number of successful individuals, professionals of various kinds (computer programmers, teachers, accountants, media professionals, at least one solicitor and a barrister), as well as a lot of other hard working decent men, successful in other fields.
4. Whoever is in charge of the present contect can not spell - it is Bethlehem, not Bethleham! No wonder the place is bottom tier if the teachers or admin can't even spell!
5. A school's history belongs to its old boys and former staff, not just to its present management.
