De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas is the first full-length studio album by Norwegian black metal band Mayhem."De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" is stated as meaning "Lord Satan's Secret Rites" (lit. 'The Occult Mysteries of Satan'). It is marked out in the band's history by being not only the last recording of Mayhem featuring the material by Per Yngve 'Dead' Ohlin before his suicide, but also the last album to feature Øystein 'Euronymous' Aarseth, despite the fact that he was murdered before the album was released. In an example of tragic irony, the bass parts on the album are played by Varg 'Grishnack' Vikernes, Aarseth's killer. On the trial, the parents of murdered Euronymous demanded that the album not feature the bass parts by Vikernes. Hellhammer promised to take care of it personally, but in fact, neither he nor any of the bandmembers were skilled enough to re-record the bass parts, and thus the Vikernes parts remained in the official release. According to Hellhammer, he decided that it was somehow fitting that murderer and victim should be together on this album. This part of the album's history is rife with controversy, as is much surrounding the murder of Euronymous. Vikernes himself considers the album as a masterpiece.
Vocals on this album were performed by Attila Csihar of Tormentor from Hungary. They are somewhat atypical for black metal, and have provoked a mixed reception from some fans.
Apart from this dark history, the album is also widely acclaimed as one of the masterpieces of the black metal genre, and its bleak aesthetics and vampiric lyrics (Inspired by Ohlin's belief that he was in fact undead after a near-death experience as a child) have often been cited as an inspiration by other black metal groups. Die-hard fans of Mayhem's early works, however, criticise it as lacking atmosphere, and particularly criticize Attila's vocals as being inferior to Dead's.
