De La Salle High School (New Orleans)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

De La Salle High School is a co-educational parochial high school in New Orleans, Louisiana.

De La Salle is part of the New Orleans parochial school system. It was originally opened in 1949 as an all-boys school. However, the school began accepting girls in 1992, and it is today a co-educational Catholic high school.

The school's team name is known as the "Cavaliers", and its school colors are maroon and white.

The campus of De La Salle High School is located in Uptown New Orleans near the University District, at the intersection of Saint Charles Avenue and Jefferson Avenue, between Saint Charles and Prytania Avenue.

It should also be noted that De La Salle was the first High School to open in New orleans following Hurricane Katrina. The school opened its doors to high school students from schools all across the city and surrounding areas.

[edit] Drug Policy

De La Salle's first year of drug testing on students was funded by the New Orleans District Attorney's office. After the funding was cancelled, De La Salle only sends out the hair samples from the students if the administration actually thinks that student is on drugs. Students use special shampoo to get the detection of weed out of their hair, so it will not show up on the drug test. Many parents and students have spoken out that the drug policy infringes on their own private life away from school.
