De La Salle College Ashfield was established in 1916 by the De La Salle Brothers and Vincentian Fathers, to provide Catholic Education for young men in Inner West Parishes of the Archdiocese of Sydney. The College is under the patronage of the Archbishop of Sydney, George Pell and seeks to provide an education in faith for its students.

This was the first Catholic High School in Australia to have a lay headmaster - Peter Donnan in the early 1970s. The De La Salle Brothers entirely withdrew from the school in the late 1970s though there has been some involvement by the order and other religious since then.

The College had a primary section until 1988, with the last year 6 class being in that year.

Formerly, there was also a feeder primary school at Haberfield, known as De La Salle Haberfield. It closed in the late 1960s.

Two teachers were/ have been there so long they are important to the history of the place. Each of these teachers exceeded 35 years service and I believe Mr Twomey has exceeded 40 years service at the school.

Mr Dennis Twomey, a magnificent English teacher, particularly to Year 10 and a noted coach of Squash and Rugby League

Mr Joseph Fernandez, a teacher of Social Sciences

The College is a member of the Metropolitan Catholic Colleges sporting association, and competes in a range of sports including Cricket, Basketball, Rugby League, Soccer and Squash. Other schools in the MCC include Christian Brothers High School Lewisham, La Salle College Bankstown, Marcellin College Randwick, Marist College Kogarah, Marist College Pagewood, St Leo's College Wahroonga and Marist College North Shore. Sport has traditionally been an important part of college life, notwithstanding the school's own limited sporting facilities.
