De-ba-jeh-mu-jig Theatre Group

De-ba-jeh-mu-jig Theatre Group is a First Nations theatre group based on Wikwemikong Unceded Indian Reserve on Manitoulin Island in Northern Ontario.
De-ba-jeh-mu-jig (meaning "story-teller") presents plays throughout Canada under its Outreach program. Its repertoir generally presents plays reflecting native culture. De-ba-jeh-mu-jig was founded by Shirley Cheechoo in 1984. In 1989, the company moved from West Bay to the Wikwemikong Unceded Indian Reserve, Manitoulin Island.
The company consists entirely of young native actors, and changes frequently. It performs plays mainly written by native writers, and sometimes collective creations by the company.
Now one of only two native professional theatres in Ontario, De-ba-jeh-mu-jig has its headquarters at Wikwemikong, where it plays to audiences each summer before going on tour.
The plays are done in either English, French, or Ojibway. Some productions are delivered bi-lingual, or tri-lingual.
