[edit] Plot summary

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

The entire book is spread out over eight weeks of time, compared to the two or three in Book 1, titled simply Abarat. The very beginning of the book is when the most time elapses, with several weeks of Candy Quackenbush and Malingo the Geshrat travelling from Hour to Hour. Christopher Carrion's whereabouts are a mystery until about the second quarter of the book, in which Mendelson Shape is killed and the Prince of Midnight plots with the Sacbrood in the Pyramids of Xuxux. Sacbrood are terrifying insects of all shapes and sizes who Carrion has been breeding in order to help him create Absolute Midnight. At this point Candy begins to develop powers like those of the Fantomaya, and starts to get a strange feeling she has been to the Abarat before.

This book introduces us to several new major characters, including Finnegan Hob, the would-be husband of Princess Boa, and Letheo, the lizard-boy servant of Christopher Carrion.

[edit] Similarity to other Fantasy

Finnegan Hobb's vendetta against "worms" is very similar to Prince Rilian's vendetta against snakes in C.S. Lewis' novel The Silver Chair, in the book prince Rilian is involved in a vendetta against all snakes because one chanced to kill his mother. This book will be followed by three more, Absolute Midnight and the Eternal, along with an as yet unnamed fifth book.
