[edit] In the anime
The Pokémon anime series and films are a meta-series of adventures separate from the canon that most of the Pokémon video games follow (with the exception of Pokémon Yellow, a game based on the anime storyline). The anime follows the quest of the main character, Ash Ketchum[2]—an in-training Pokémon Master—as he and several other companions[2] travel around the fictitious world of Pokémon along with their Pokémon partners.
In the anime, Dawn is from Twinleaf Town in Sinnoh. Her mother Ayako was once a Top Pokémon coordinator, having won the Grand Festival. Wishing to follow in her mother's footsteps, Dawn set out to become a Pokémon coordinator. Her starter Pokémon was a Piplup. Upon starting her journey, Dawn saw the legendary Pokémon Emrit (which ties her to Ash Ketchum, who saw Ho-Oh at the start of his journey). Also upon beginning her journey, Dawn came across an injured Pikachu who, whilst defending itself from Team Rocket, destroyed her bike (a running gag in the series; both May and Misty have had their bikes fried by an errant bolt of lightning). As it turned out, the Pikachu she came across was Ash's injured Pikachu. She is currently traveling through Sinnoh with Ash and Brock. She finds a rival in Nozomi, another Coordinator.
In some of the episodes, Dawn tends to wear different clothing almost everyday. In contests, she usually puts on a fashionable dress. On the first episode, "Following a Maiden's Voyage", she brought a suitcase full of contest dresses and clothing. Instead of praising her for her skilled fashion sense, her mother packed necessary things in a small Pokemon bag (similar to the one in the games). In the un-cut version of the episode, she returned home for her clothes after realizing she had forgotten them.
[edit] Pokémon
-
- Piplup is Dawn's starter Pokémon. Having run off from Professor Rowan's lab in a dispute with a Chimchar, Dawn found Piplup trapped in the web of a wild Ariados and freed the Pokémon. The pair bonded and Dawn chose Piplup as her starter. Piplup is a bit of a brat and lost its first battle, though it is a determined Pokémon who was very excited about Dawn's proposal of competing in Pokémon Contests. Dawn and Piplup share a close bond, although they do tend to get into fights.
-
- Dawn captured a Buneary in the ninth episode of the Diamond and Pearl series. Within the first four episodes, she had twice tried to catch a Buneary, but failed both times. In both the manga and the anime, her Buneary has a crush on Ash's Pikachu. Dawn used it during her first Contest in a fight against Nozomi's Glameow, which she lost. Buneary knows a lot of competitive moves like Ice Beam which is good in a lot of competitions and contests.
-
- Dawn captured a Pachirisu in the episode "I'll Get Pachirisu……Is That Okay!?". Like Pikachu when it first met Ash, Pachirisu was not obeying Dawn's orders. Realizing she couldn't train it, Dawn released the Pachirisu. Jessie later tried to capture it but she failed. Encouraged by Ash and Brock, Dawn went after Pachirisu again. After a battle between Team Rocket, Pachirisu and Dawn developed a bond, and now Pachirisu returned to Dawn's team. She used it during her second contest against Ash's Aipom; although she lost, it was Pachirisu's first ever competition.
[edit] In video games
Dawn is the female protagonist of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl; as such, is a playable character. However, if the player chooses to play the male character, then she will be Professor Rowan's assistant and one of their rivals.
