User talk:David Foster

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hi! I'm David (Dave) Foster. I live in South Florida. I am in college majoring in Political Science. I also have a website, which the server just crashed but should be up soon! I'll put a link. See you in Wikiland

Hi David, welcome to Wikipedia. I notice you're marking some edits as minor even though they're more than changes such as spelling corrections or formating changes. Please see minor edit for a discussion of when an edit should be marked as minor. Please also cite the source for your material in the edit summary. Thanks Tom 2:14 2 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Done and thanks!--David Foster 06:08, 15 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Seattle demographics

I see that you've changed demographic statistics for Seattle, still attributing them to the U.S. Census of 2000. I believe the previous numbers correctly reflected that census. Do you have a different source (in which case please cite it), or is there an updated revision of the census, or what? -- Jmabel | Talk 21:29, Feb 17, 2005 (UTC)

So can I assume that you will sort this out in the article? -- Jmabel | Talk 07:30, Feb 27, 2005 (UTC)

No --David Foster 12:41, 19 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Global warming.gif and Global warming2.gif

David, you recently uploaded Image:Global warming.gif and Image:Global warming2.gif, marked them as GFDL and stated "The original version of this figure was prepared by Illinois State Museum (http://www.museum.state.il.us/exhibits/ice_ages/) from publicly available data. The figure may be used under the GFDL."

I suspect that both of these images are copyright problems. While the fact that the data is public is good, the copyright in such cases vests with the person or organization that prepared a particular style of presentation for such data. In this case, that would appear to be the not-for-profit Illinois State Museum Society. Unless you have their explicit permission, you would not have the authority to release these images under the GFDL.

Unless you can give me a good reason why the GFDL should apply, I intend to list both these images on Wikipedia:Copyright problems. Dragons flight 18:40, Mar 20, 2005 (UTC)

Noted and accepted--David Foster 10:03, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)

(William M. Connolley 13:34, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)) DF is perhaps to modest to point this out, but the new pics are also largely unneeded, because there are nicer ones at User:Dragons flight/Images.

[edit] Source for information on L.A. page

Hi there:

CIS is hardly a solid source for such a controversial point. All of the well-established, well-respected think tanks on both sides of the political spectrum (Cato, Heritage, Hudson, Hoover, Manhattan, Brookings, Urban, AEI, etc.) are not afraid to list their trustees and their experts. They also prominently display their experts' education and backgrounds.

Without any listing of its personnel or any description of their qualifications, CIS could easily be three ordinary guys in a one-room office making up numbers off the top of their heads. When you've actually got hands-on experience with political battles, you'll realize there are way too many wannabe think tanks all over the U.S. that have fancy Web sites and not much else.

While you're still an undergraduate, you might want to consider taking courses in epistemology and critical thinking.

[edit] Orphaned fair use image (Image:Sukhoi Su-47.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Sukhoi Su-47.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image is unlicensed for use on Wikipedia and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful.

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Megapixie 05:28, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Sienna Miller

The definition of English is not based on place of birth or whether she has English parents or not. She has lived in England since a rather young age, considers herself English, and, quite importantly, is considered English by her peers (in this case, other English people, which is really what matters). Having been born in the States myself, and having an American mother and British father, I am quite content to say that I am English, without having any need to say 'Culturally, I consider myself'. I could consider myself a rabbit, but if the other rabbits do not consider me one, it makes absolutely no difference. Similarly, I've known Americans who've faked our accent and no English person would consider them anything more than an American faking our accent (and similarly, visa-versa for us faking an American accent). Thus, while consideration is important (if she doesn't feel English, you can't force her to be) her peers must ultimately have some say in the matter, and I don't know any English people (including myself) who consider her anything other than English. As previously noted on the discussion page, we're discussing English, not British, and thus her passport and citizenship status are not important in regards to her nationality. Roche-Kerr 12:28, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

Perhaps this should be explained this way on her page since most people think that when someone calls themselves 'English', that they are a British citizen.

[edit] Image:Rafael Araujo.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Rafael Araujo.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Mosmof 01:46, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:PAULMARTIN.jpg

Thank you for uploading Image:PAULMARTIN.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Mosmof 18:42, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Lindsay Lohan

With all respect, is there a purpose for this sentence? It does nothing other than repeat the sentence immediately prior (which is already sourced) while introducing a reference to an image that seems to be little more than an excuse to get US Weekly (a poor excuse for a source) into the article. What am I missing? RadioKirk (u|t|c) 21:44, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

I don't know what the problem is. It is not repeating the information from the last sentence, it adds to it by updating the information. I don't see how US Weekly would be a poor source if it is an actual fact they are stating. I do agree though that Ms. Lohan is not a important article to be reporting on.--David Foster 17:03, 10 February 2007 (UTC)
To be honest, I didn't see anything that improved on the previous sentence. More importantly, Us Weekly fails as a reliable source since, like other tabloids, it relies on unnamed "friends", "insiders", "sources", etc., to create its "stories", often demeaning and salacious. If you can't trust the source, you can't trust whether something is an "actual fact", and Wikipedia's verifiability standards state, incontrovertibly, that the "threshold for inclusion in Wikipedia is verifiability, not truth" (emphasis from the policy page). Please also read policy on biographies of living persons. Thanks. RadioKirk (u|t|c) 18:58, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
Actually if you look at that issue of US Weekly, it shows a photo of Ms. Lohan smoking at that date, so it is a little more than a 'friends word', but an actual fact. --David Foster 00:19, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Krause.jpg

Warning sign This file may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Krause.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read carefully the instructions at Wikipedia:Fair use and then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Fut.Perf. 10:56, 17 February 2007 (UTC)
