From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
David Evan (Dave) Harris lives in Berkeley, California and is currently in the middle of his "gap year." Luckily, it's turning out to be a gap 18 months. It shall be terminated in December, 2004, when he arrives in São Paulo, Brazil to begin graduate studies (pos-graduação) in political geography at the University of São Paulo.
Dave's gap year accomplishments include:
1) Not paying rent for twelve consecutive months thanks to 4 months of travel, 4 months of house-sitting, 2 months of living with his parents, and 2 months of "boarding" and "fishing" at the Lothlorien Coop.
2) Attending more than 50 different free lectures, documentaries, panel discussions, and art exhibits on the University of California, Berkeley campus. Topics included Lula, the Weathermen, tourism in Bodh Gaya, India, and Ecuadoran-US agrarian research collaboration.
3) Learning to speak Spanish almost fluently and Portuguese stumblingly. This all happened in his 16-week trip to Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, and Brazil.
4) Organizing a political campaign to pass a $108 million bond measure to rebuild, expand, and renovate Gavilan College in Gilroy, California.
5) Receiving the Rotary Club Ambassadorial Scholarship to fund two years of graduate studies in Brazil.
6) Working for six months as a grant-writer at the Kensington Research Group in Kensington, California.
7) Developing a grant proposal and shooting pilot footage for the Global Lives Project with his collaborator, Daniel Dennis Jones.
[edit] Shameless Plug
David Evan Harris is one of the most dynamic, intellectually-stimulating, and adventurous people that I know. He takes Tikkun Olam very much to heart.
