Talk:David Irving/Comments

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I have the impression that many of the comments have as their purpose defaming Irving rather than helping readers gain an understanding of the argument he is making in his books. The topic of Holocaust Denial has its own treatment and rationale and there is no reason to repeat these attacks as a substitute for Irving's outlook. A single reference to the fact that he has been denounced as a holocaust revisionist and that more information can be found in the Holocaust Denial topic is more than sufficient.

All historical research focused on political issues of World War Two and its aftermath is controversial because it has a bearing on the political fortunes of contemporary politicians and the interests they serve. Most historians are well aware that questioning what passes as historical truth about this era is at the very least a danger to their careers as well as their personal safety. Most readers outside of academia are not aware of the political struggle over what some insist is historical truth.
The article at hand is an excellent example of this political struggle but it is completely lacking in intellectual content or focus on Irving’s work. Vague references to newspaper articles as sources about historical events and extractions from literature written specifically to denounce Irving reveals nothing but hostility. The author of this article tells the reader nothing other than he or she does not like Irving personally and uses the article to provide information of his or her political preferences. My recommendation is to scrap this poorly written and misleading effort, find some credible people who know the main tenants of Irving's work and represent them honestly and in a manner which is of some use to readers.
