David Ward (Rugby League)

David Ward played for and managed Leeds Rugby League FC. Possibly the greatest moment of his playing career was his performance during the 1978 Challenge Cup final at Wembley Stadium against St.Helens, where he gave a commanding performance marshalling the Leeds team, and kicked two late drop-goals to complete what was then a record comeback.

One of the more notable of his coaching career was when Ward successfully signed John Gallagher for Leeds, converting the player from Rugby Union, but was ultimately unsuccessful at Leeds, despite being in charge of the only full-time squad in the league at the time apart from Wigan. He later went on to coach Batley in the lower leagues.

David runs Birstall Squash Club, and has done for many years, and his son Danny is forging a successful career in rugby league, currently playing with Hull Kingston Rovers.
