David Stuart (Mayanist)

Dr. David Stuart (b. 1965) is a Mayanist scholar and Professor of Mesoamerican Art and Writing at the University of Texas at Austin. He began deciphering Mayan hieroglyphs at the age of 8, under the tutelage of Linda Schele. In 1983, at the age of 18, he became the youngest-ever recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship "genius grant." He has made major contributions in the field of epigraphy, particularly related to the decipherment of the Maya script used by the pre-Columbian Maya civilization of Mesoamerica.[1]
