Professor David N. Payne, CBE FRS FREng (born 13 August 1944) is a leading figure in the field of photonics. He has won many prizes for his work, including the Benjamin Franklin Medal for Engineering, and is a regular speaker at optics conferences around the world.
He conducted much of the pioneering work on optical fibres; including the first optical fibre drawing tower in a university. He was a leader on the team that helped develop the erbium-doped fibre amplifier, a type of optical amplifier and a crucial component for the internet and telecommunications infrastructure. Payne also pioneered the first practical fibre lasers. He is the current director of the Optoelectronics Research Centre at the University of Southampton. He founded York Technologies and SPI Lasers PLC which is currently listed on AIM at the London Stock Exchange.
