David Moncoutié

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

David Moncoutié (born April 30, 1975 in Provins, France) is a professional cyclist. He is well-known as a very humble person, and many have compared his mentality to that of a recreational cyclist who just enjoys riding his bicycle. In the past he has been criticized for lacking aggressiveness and for his often haplessness. For a while he was not able to put on a rain cape without having to stop his bicycle and put his feet on the ground. However, he was known as a very clean cyclist who relies on homeopathic remedies, and a role model for aspiring cyclists trying to stay away from the drug abuse in cycling.

Moncoutié is currently a professional with the French team Cofidis, with whom he turned professional in 1997. He is known as a climber, and won his first professional victory in a mountain stage of Dauphiné Libéré.

His breakthrough year was in 2004 when he won a stage of the 2004 edition of Tour de France to Figeac. The following year in the 2005 edition of Tour de France he won his biggest victory in the stage from Briançon to Digne-les-Bains on Bastille Day, guaranteeing him a place in the hearts of French cycling fans.
