David Valentine Lawrence (born January 28, 1964, Gloucester) is a former English cricketer who played in 5 Tests and one ODI from 1988 to 1992. David "Syd" Lawrence was a massively powerful fast-bowler in the late 80s and early 90s before an horrific knee injury curtailed his career.

He was born in England to Jamaican parents. From the age of 17 he played for Gloucestershire, opening the bowling with Courtney Walsh. He had a very strong action but was often unbalanced at point of delivery. He showed some promise with the bat with a high score of 34.

He came into the England team for the one off Test against Sri Lanka in 1988, but did not force his way back until 1991, when he took 5 wickets and contributed to England's series levelling win at The Oval. However, having just established himself as his country's spearhead, he suffered an appalling knee injury on February 10, 1992 in Wellington, New Zealand while playing for his country the following winter, never playing for England again. He was 28 years old.

He made two brief but abortive comebacks for Gloucestershire.

He now owns a nightclub in Bristol called Dojos, which is located on Park Row.

His wife owns a health and beauty shop next door to the nightclub; he drives a Rangerover 4x4; his son goes to Colston's Collegiate School, where David father teaches cricket.
