David Hastings Moore

David Hastings Moore (4 September 183823 November 1915) was an American bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church, elected in 1900.

[edit] Birth and Early Life

David was born 4 September 1838 in Athens, Ohio, U.S.A., a son of the Hon. Eliakim Hastings Moore. David was converted to the Christian faith in 1855.

[edit] Education and Military Service

David graduated from the Ohio University in 1860. In May 1862 he volunteered in the Union Army during the American Civil War, becoming a Captain commanding an Ohio Company at Harper's Ferry when General Miles surrended that post. Released on parole, he was soon exchanged and re-entered the service as a Major, then was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel of the 125th Ohio Infantry

[edit] Ordained Ministry

David entered the ordained ministry of the M.E. Church in 1860, admitted as a Probationer in the Ohio Annual Conference.

Prior to his election to the episcopacy, Moore served as a pastor. He also served for a time as the editor of the Western Christian Advocate, a Methodist publication. He wrote a biography of his friend, fellow-Ohioan Bishop John Morgan Walden. Moore also became the first Chancellor of the University of Denver, from October 1880 to June 1889. The University was founded by the Methodist Church in 1864 as the Colorado Seminary.

Bishop Moore died on 23 November 1915 on a train to Cincinnati, Ohio. He is buried in Athens, Ohio.
