From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

David Edward Maust (April 5, 1954 - January 20, 2006), known as "Crazy Dave" by neighborhood kids,[1] was an American serial killer whose primary targets were young boys. An alleged rape victim,[2] Maust had a highly troubled childhood and was confined in a mental institution at the age of 9 [3]. He has been suspected or charged for at least six murders, including one in Germany while he was in the United States Army, two murders (including a stabbing) in Texas of young boys in the early 1980's, and three in Illinois after being released from prison in 1999 following his supervision period in 2003 [4]. He has been compared to John Wayne Gacy on numerous occasions, and is similar in that he has been considered mentally unfit to stand trial on multiple occasions[5] and is also reported to have been homosexual[6].

Maust died at St. Anthony Medical Center in Crown Point, Indiana, 27 hours after a botched hanging attempt at jail-cell suicide.
