[edit] Newcastle United Career

At the age of nine, Edgar turned down the opportunity to sign a scholarship deal for Manchester United,[1] opting to stay in Canada. However after later impressing in trials for numerous other clubs including Celtic, he was offered a scholarship at the Newcastle United Academy, which he accepted. He officially joined the Academy at the age of thirteen.

Edgar impressed Spanish side Málaga CF in September, 2005 when Newcastle played the La Liga club in a friendly game. Malaga, as well as a few English clubs, declared an interest in signing him. However, Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd was quick to announce that Edgar was not for sale, and that he had been given a new contract by the club to ward off any further interest.[2]

Edgar made his first team debut for Newcastle against Bolton Wanderers [3] on December 26, 2006. On January 1, 2007 during his home debut he scored his first goal for the club with a long range strike against Manchester United in a 2-2 draw, as part of a makeshift Newcastle defence consisting of three under-21 players and a winger.[4]

On February 1, 2007 he was named as Canadian Youth Player of the Year for the 2006 season.[5]

[edit] Canadian national football team

On May 19, 2006, whilst celebrating his nineteenth birthday, Edgar played and scored in the Canadian Under-20 side's 2-1 victory over the Brazilian Under-20 side.[6]

In 2007, he will help hosts Canada compete for the Under-20 World Cup. Edgar has been named one of six Ambassadors for the Canadian team during the Under 20 World Cup.
