[edit] Early life
David Collins was born in the Renmore area of Galway in 1984. From an early age he showed a great interest in the game of hurling and in time he would go on to play for club and county.
[edit] Playing career
[edit] Club
Collins plays his club hurling with his local Liam Mellows GAA club in Galway. He has had some success at underage level, however, the club hasn't won a senior county championship since 1970.
[edit] Inter-county
In the early 2000s Collins started playing on the Galway minor huling panel. He had little success at this level, however, he won an All-Ireland medal with his native county's under-21 side in 2005. By this stage Collins had already joined the Galway senior hurling panel. He won a National Hurling League medal in 2004 and made his senior championship later that same year. The following year Galway played Cork in the All-Ireland final. Collins ended up on the losing side in the final, however, his performance in the championship earned him the coveted "Young Hurler of the Year" award. In 2006 Galway had a poor season and they were eliminated from the championship by eventual winners Kilkenny. AT the end of the year Ger Loughnane was appointed manager of Galway and Collins was appointed captain of the side for the 2007 championship.
