David Beharall (born on March 8, 1979 in Newcastle upon Tyne in the North East of England),[1] is a professional English footballer who is a free agent after being released by Stockport County in 2006. He plays as a central defender.

Beharall started off his football playing career for Newcastle United in 1996 and graduating to the first team in 1998. While at St James' Park he had loan spells at Grimsby Town and Oldham Athletic in 2001 and 2002 before joining Oldham for a for a fee of £150,000 in March 2002. He left Oldham in February 2005 to join Carlisle United on a Free transfer and a year later in 2006 Beharall joined Stockport County before getting released 3 months later in May 2006. He has since failed to earn a contract at another club so he has been a free agent.

[edit] Newcastle United

Beharall started off his playing career at hometown club Newcastle United in 1996 where he graduated to the first team in 1998. Beharall made his first FA Premier League start and his début for Newcastle United in the 3-1 loss against Everton on the 17 April 1999 during the 1998-99 season,[3] Beharall started another 3 FA Premier League games during that season. During the 1999-00 season Beharall played 2 FA Premier League games; the 3-3 draw against Wimbledon[4] and the 5-1 loss at Manchester United.[5] The match against Manchester United turned out to be the last match he would play for the St James' Park club as the boss Sir Bobby Robson never played him in the Newcastle United first team again and spent two years with playing a single first team match. In January 2001 Beharall wanted to join Prseton North End on loan after spending two day at Deepdale in early January,[6] but North End's manager David Moyes decided against the move.

[edit] Grimsby Town

With first team opportunities running out at Newcastle, Beharall joined Grimsby Town in August 2001 originally on a trial, with a view to a loan move due to Grimsby's lack of central defenders[7] after his trial he joined The Mariners on loan in August 2001 for 3 months and made his début in the 1-0 win against Crewe Alexandra on August 11, 2001,[8] Beharall played another 15 league and cup games for Grimsby Town, including the 2-1 Cup upset they inflicted on Liverpool in the Football League Cup 3rd round at Anfield on October 9, 2001, Beharall gave away the penalty that Liverpool's midfielder Gary McAllister scored, he was judged to have handled the ball in the penalty box. That goal gave Liverpool the lead with 19 minutes left but goals from Marlon Broomes and Phil Jevons in stoppage cancelled out Beharall's mistake and Grimsby pulled of a big cup upset.[9] Beharall endend his loan spell in November 2001.

[edit] Oldham Athletic

Ten days after leaving Grimsby Town, Beharall was on the move again, this time to Oldham Athletic on a loan deal to the end of the season,[10] with Beharall making his dèbut in a 0-0 draw against Stoke City on November 21, 2001.[11]Beharall played 17 league games, two FA Cup and two Football League Trophy matches during his loan spell at Oldham Athletic, scoring one goal in the 89th minute in a 1-1 draw against Wigan Athletic on December 15, 2001.[12] Beharall was bought by Oldham Athletic on March 6, 2002 for £150,000 on a three year contract after impressing during his loan deal.[13] Beharall played one more league game for "The Latics" during the 2001-02 season and his first game as a permanent Oldham Athletic player came against "The Latics" of Wigan Athletic on March 9, 2006, a match which Wigan Athletic won 1-0.[14] In the 2002-03 season Beharall played 32 league, 4 League and 3 FA Cup games for Oldham Athletic under the mangement of Iain Dowie who replaced Mick Wadsworth in the summer of 2002. In the pre-season of the 2003-04 season Beharall suffered an injury which left out injured until October 2003,[15] during this time in August 2003 Beharall was a victim of a carjacking when he and team mate Adam Griffin were attacked when they stopped at a cash machine with Beharall leaving Grffin in the passenger seat and his £21,000 Mercedes-Benz R230 car parked at a Texaco garage in Oldham Griffin was left defenceless with one of the attackers holding him at knifepoint and another man hit Griffin's left arm with an iron bar the dragging and throwing Griffin to the grond. Beharall left his wallet and mobile phone in the car but was relived that he and Griffin were OK.[16] During the 2003-2004 season Beharall played 7 league, 2 FA Cup and 2 Football league games, he also scored 2 league games against Plymouth Argyle on 1 November 2003.[17] With first team opportunities running out at Boundary Park under new manager Brian Talbot and Beharall only playing 6 league games during the 2004-05 season and with his contract ending at the end of the season Beharall left the club on January 24, 2005 by after agreeing a settlement figure.[18]

Nine days after leaving Oldham Athletic, Beharall joined Carlisle United, with him signing a contract until July 2006,[19] with his transfer Beharall joined a club outside of the Football League for the first time in his career (Carlisle United were in the Football Conference). Beharall made his debut for the Brunton Park club in the 2-2 draw against Gravesend & Northfleet on February 12, 2005.[20] In the 2004-2005 season. Beharall played an important part in Carlisle United's return to the Football League, playing 14 matches (3 of these being playoff matches) and playing 1 FA Trophy match, he scored one Conference goal, in the 2-1 win at Farnborough Town on April 2, 2005.[21] Beharall's pre-season preparations were ruined by an injury which also make him miss the start of Carlisle United's season but the MRI scan told that he hadn't suffered a tear to any of the major knee ligaments.[22] When did return from injury in October 2005, Beherall played 6 League and 2 Football League Trophy matches during the 2005-06 season. Most of these apperences came in October/November 2005 and with first team apperences drying up Beharall left Carlisle United by mutual consent on February 1, 2006.[23]

After being released by Carlisle United, Beharall decided to join League 2 strugglers Stockport County until the end of the 2005-06 season, after playing well in a reserve match for County prior to his move, he had high hopes of saving the club from relegation and hoped to impress the County manager Jim Gannon enough two earn a new contract for the following season.[24] Beharall made his début for County in the 2-1 away victory against Chester City.[25] Beharall played another 11 league games during that 2005-06 for Stockport and was starting contract negotiations the managed Jim Gannon,[26] but in May 2006 Beharall along with midfielder Ross Greenwood were released from the club.[27]
