David Barton (1783-1837), one of the first U. S. senators from Missouri, serving 1821-1831.

Barton was born near Greenville TN (then part of North Carolina). He was a major political presence in early Missouri, serving as president of the state's constitutional convention, speaker of the State house, and as one of its first pair of U.S. Senators. Congressional Biographies Barton County is named for him.

He was the brother of Joshua Barton, the State's first Secretary of State and its first U.S. Attorney, who was killed in a duel with the State Surveyor in 1823.
