Dave Rowntree

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dave Rowntree (born David Rowntree on 8 May 1964, in Colchester, Essex, England) is best known as the drummer in the band Blur. He is an outspoken supporter of Internet filesharing and opposes movements to ban sharing of copyrighted material. When asked on Blur's website about how he felt about single "Out of Time" being leaked on the Internet before its release he replied "I'd rather it gushed." In this context, he is a member of the Advisory Council of the Open Rights Group, a UK-based digital rights NGO.

Before joining the band, Rowntree was a computer engineer, having studied for an HND in Computer Science at Thames Polytechnic [1] In the band's early days, he wrote a device driver for the Linux kernel and would take source code on tour as "light reading".

Rowntree also owns an animation company called Nanomation. One of his projects is a South Park-esque animation series called Empire Sq. The five-minute episodes were previously only available to see via the website but they made their TV debut on Channel 4 on Friday 18 February 2005. A new series of Empire Sq is currently airing in America

In 2006, in between his musical and TV commitments Dave has started a solo project/band called The Ailerons.
